Q&A with Florence Bain, Full Stack Engineer
We sat down with Florence Bain, Full Stack Engineer, to discuss her role at BCB Group.
Q: Describe your job role at BCB Group
Florence: I am a developer working on our tech for payments and banking, we work across UI, backend services and API’s. As part of this team, my role involves building and releasing new features for our platforms and maintaining our current system. Some projects which have come out of the payments team have been International USD payments, easy deposit searching and new banking integrations.
Q: What does a typical work day look like for you?
Florence: My day consists of a morning team standup, this is where we go through all the current work in progress that has yet to be released, this gives us a chance to understand what everyone is working on and take the opportunity to ask for help if blocked. As we have an agile approach to work we support agile ceremonies, we hold retrospectives every two weeks and a refinement session every week where we will go through work coming up, break down work into smaller pieces and clarify details. The rest of the day will involve some alone time working on developing new features, testing each other’s work and pairing with teammates to help unblock each other or just as a chance to collaborate and support our development.
Q: Why did you choose to go into this industry?
Florence: As a newbie working in tech, I knew I wanted to go into something that interested me. I had already been learning about crypto and blockchain outside of the Makers course and my final product focused on crypto trading. I was excited to hear BCB’s pitch at the Makers Career Fair and knew I wanted to join a company that’s building something innovative. I thought BCB seemed like an exciting company, filled with some amazing ideas, had a lot to teach me and great people to work with, I still hold this perspective over two years in.
Q: What is your favourite thing about working at BCB Group?
Florence: BCB is a really supportive company, and I feel so thankful to have started my new career in a place that values junior developers who are starting new careers and often don’t come from technical backgrounds. BCB has been great in endorsing women in tech and has taken strides to improve our diversity by offering apprenticeships to women developers and helping to support our development by providing us with other amazing developers to work with.
Q: If you had to describe BCB Group in one word, what would it be?
Florence: Inspiring
Q: What are your interests outside of BCB Group?
Florence: Outside of work, I love travelling. I spent 4 years travelling and working outside of the UK which gave me the opportunity to see some beautiful parts of the world and has given me the bug to keep exploring. Besides that, I love art and enjoy going to galleries and exhibitions. I enjoy being creative at home and spending my free time drawing, painting and scrapbooking.
